Grants for projects aiming to mobilise and encourage private investors to participate in the sustainable development of third countries

Description:

Adopted in September 2017 and inspired by the Juncker Plan (EFSI), the EU External Investment Plan supports investment in African and European Neighbourhood countries. The European Fund for Sustainable Development (EFSD) is the financing mechanism through which the EIP supports investments by public financial institutions and the private sector

Objectives

* Contribute to the achievement of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDOs), while addressing some of the root causes of migration;
* Mobilise sustainable public and private investments to improve economic and social development, with a focus on the creation of decent jobs

Priorities

* Contribute in a coherent and systematic way
to the sustainable development of the
the EU ;
* Spark investment and mobilise funds, by
to countries where it is difficult to invest, and facilitates
investments by private actors who, failing this, will
would invest less or not at all;
* Target socio-economic sectors, in particular
sustainable infrastructure (energy, water, transport),
information and communication technologies,
environment, social infrastructure, capital
human…), and provide microenterprises and SMEs with
financing that will put a particular emphasis on

* The first 5 investment components of the EIP to support public or private funds:
– Sustainable energy and connectivity;
– Financing of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs);
– Sustainable agriculture, rural entrepreneurs and agro-industry;
– Sustainable cities ;
– Digital for development

Amount:

* The EIP:
- 4.1 billion euros of European Commission participation
- Objective to mobilise up to €44 billion of investment by 2020
