Valletta and Leeuwarden-Fryslând, the two European Capitals of Culture, receive positive reviews from the monitoring panel. The panel is recomming to award them the €1.5 million Melina Mercouri Prize which is grants for cultural events in big cities of the European Union. For this annual award the Council designates two cities among the EU Member States as European Capitals of Culture and it is the Europe Creative program that helps to finance the demonstrations.
From the time of nomination to the title year, the European Capitals of Culture are subject to a monitoring procedure carried out by a panel of experts. This procedure includes two official meetings, the first one three years before the title year and the second one nine months before the starting of the year. The second monitoring meeting for Valletta and Leeuwarden took place, today, in Brussels. During the monitoring phase, the panel makes recommendations to the cities and ensures that the programmes for which they were nominated are respected.
In view of a positive assessment, the panel has recommended that the Commission award the Melina Mercouri Prize to be paid three months before the start of the European Capitals of Culture year. This €1.5 million prize is funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme.
