250 million euros for the School fruit, vegetables and milk scheme

Millions of children across the EU will receive milk and fruit and vegetables as part of the EU’s School fruit, vegetables and milk scheme in 2019/2020. This programme benefited more than 20 million children during the 2017/2018 school year.

National budget allocations for EU programmes to support the consumption of fruit, vegetables and milk in schools for the 2019/2020 school year were adopted today. In total, 145 million euro are allocated to the first programme and 105 million euro to the second. This distribution programme is complemented by educational measures to familiarise children with agriculture and promote healthy eating.

Today, the Commission published an evaluation report showing that in the 2017/2018 school year, some 159 000 schools participated in the programme. During this period, a total of 255 500 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables and 178 million litres of milk were distributed to European children thanks to funding from the EU budget of more than 182 million euro.
