The European Union wants to improve the energy efficiency of its road transport, currently doing worse than Canada, the United States or even China. On 21th November 2017, it launched a public consultation to study options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its transportation.

In addition, emissions from trucks, buses and coaches now account for 5% of total Union emissions, one fifth of all transport emissions and just under a quarter of road transport emissions.
Figures have steadily increased since 1990 (+ 19%) and will increase by 6% between 2015 and 2030 if no action is taken by then. And especially for trucks, which could constitute 35% of emissions from road transport in 2050 if nothing is done, while the share of road freight must grow by 60% according to estimates.
