Launch of a European Health Data Space

The European Commission launched the European Health Data Space (EHDS) on Tuesday 3 May, giving new impetus to the EU’s digital health policy.

The development of digital tools is hampered by the complexity of rules, structures and processes in the Member States that hinder access to and sharing of health data, especially across borders.

The EHDS will enable the EU to transform the way healthcare is delivered to citizens across Europe. This data space aims to :

  • Allow citizens to control their own health data, within their country and across borders
  • Improve the use of health data for research, innovation and policy-making

The proposal presented by the European Commission will now be discussed by the Council and the European Parliament.
