EU Bodies and Agencies (EUBA) – Welfare monitoring: data driven risk assessment in fast and slower growing broilers (BROWARD) – 2025

The EU Bodies and Agencies (EUBA) are key entities that support EU institutions in implementing its policies. Priorities and funded actions

Objectives

  • To produce and analyse a dataset from primary field data on animal-based measures (ABMs) reflecting broiler chicken welfare, along with contextual, resource-based, and management-based data from various housing systems and practices in farms and slaughterhouses
  • To test how three interventions—stocking density, elevated platforms, and dark brooders—affect broiler chicken welfare, and to share all data in an open-access dataset

Priorities

  • Priority 1: To map and select ABMs and contextual data (MBMs and RBMs) to assess broiler chicken welfare on farms using a defined protocol
  • Priority 2: To collect field data on ABMs and contextual information for broiler chickens on farms and at slaughterhouses
  • Priority 3: To develop and establish a dataset with ABMs, RBMs, and MBMs to support future risk assessments
  • Priority 4: To conduct experiments on fast- and slower-growing broiler genotypes to assess the separate effects of interventions on stocking density, elevated structures, and dark brooders

Among financed actions

  • Organise the kick-off meeting with EFSA and deliver an inception report with agenda, minutes, and Gantt chart
  • Develop and deliver a full training programme for field evaluators, including fieldwork and refresher sessions
  • Prepare the final project report and a 40-slide presentation for EFSA summarising project results
  • Submit at least three scientific publications based on the experimental studies, with FAIR data sharing
  • Present field data collection results in a narrative report and a 20-slide presentation for EFSA

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be on the list of competent organisations designated by the Member States in accordance with Article 36 of Regulation (EC) 178/2002 and Commission Regulation (EC) 2230/2004 (Click here)
  • A consortium composed of at least 2 entities, established in at least 1 different EU Member States or associated countries to the programme must be constituted
