Extra 119.5 million euro for human rights and democracy

The EU has announced additional funds to protect democracy and human rights globally. This financial envelop will be provided by the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument – Globa Europe (NDICI).

As the EU is fully commited to protect individuals and their basic human rights, it announced it will not stand idle in the face of eroding democracy around the world. Consequently, it renewed its commitment to democratic institutions, social inclusion and participatory society through the allocation of additional 119.5 million euros to boost its support worldwide. The funds will contribute to implementing the EU Human Rights and Democracy Action Plan 2020-2024, and country plans under the EU Gender Action PLan III. It will also provide relief to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The funds will be divided between five actions: the Democracy Support Alliance, the UN’s ONHCR, local civil society organisation, democracy activists an human rights defenders in 116 countries, the EU’s Human Rights Crises Facility and the Global Campus for Human Rights. More specifically, these funds will finance six main areas of action: advancing the fundamental values of democracy, the rule of law, the universality, invisibility and interdependence of human rights, respect for human dignity, the principle of non-discimination, equality and solidarity and the respect for the principles of the UN Charter and international human rights law.
