Making abortion a fundamental right of the EU

After the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, MEPs vote for a resolution to make abortion a fundamental right in the EU.

The resolution calls for the right to abortion to be included in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, a document on the personal rights and freedoms of EU citizens that is binding on member states when they implement EU law. Thus, it would add an article that would state that “everyone has the right to a safe and legal abortion”.
This demand fuels the debate on the modification of the European treaties, desired by European citizens but rejected by most member states, with a third of European countries openly opposing treaty changes.
