The action plan on critical raw materials presented today by the European Commission aims to promote Europe’s autonomy regarding raw materials and their sources of supply. Its goal is to guide Europe towards a more sustainable and responsible supply.
Indeed, access to resources is becoming a major strategic issue in the context of the Green Pact for Europe and the Commission then proposes ten concrete actions to achieve its main objectives. The action plan on critical raw materials aims to:
– develop resilient value chains for EU industrial ecosystems;
– reduce dependence on critical primary materials through circular resource use, sustainable product design and innovation;
– strengthen the supply of raw materials on the EU internal market;
– diversify supplies from third countries and eliminate distortions in international trade, fully respecting the EU’s international obligations.
The Commission hopes to set up a European alliance for raw materials in a few weeks in collaboration with the Member States.
