The European Commission funds 49 space research projects

The Commission has announced the winners of the 2021 -2022 calls for projects of the Horizon Europe Cluster 4 “Digital, Industry and Space”. In all, 49 projects with a budget of €200 million have been selected.

The projects aim to strengthen the EU’s competitiveness and technological independence in the space sector while consolidating the flagship elements of the EU space programme and developing new applications and services. The selected projects also focus on European access to space and future technologies such as quantum, space weather and space science.

Here are some examples of projects that will be funded:

  • ASCEND: This project aims to demonstrate that placing future data centres in orbit, using solar energy outside the earth’s atmosphere, will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of digitalisation
  • ASTRAOIS: The final aim of this project is to make recommendations for a better match between the European space sector curricula and the skills required by the future EU space sector

Space-related projects are expected to receive close to €1.6 billion during the seven years of the implementation of Horizon Europe, which represents an average of €225 million per year.
