Support for the tourism sector: a priority for Southern Europe

While the European Commission has still not formulated its recommendations to the Member States concerning the conduct of the summer holidays, the countries of southern Europe are already concerned about the dramatic consequences of the covid-19 epidemic on the tourism sector.

Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, France, Malta, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania called on the European Commission to establish a joint recovery plan to mitigate the devastating financial impact of the health crisis on tourism.

The nine Member States call on the EU executive to include tourism in the EU’s post-coronavirus recovery plan. They call for ‘level playing field’ travel rules and warn that poorly synchronised deconfinement could harm the tourism sector.
