The EURATOM programme should enable Europe to maintain its world leadership in nuclear safety and waste management and achieve the highest level of radiation protection.

Objectives

  • To improve and support nuclear safety, security and safeguards, radiation protection, safe management of spent fuel and radioactive waste and decommissioning, including the safety and security of the use of nuclear energy and applications of ionising radiation other than electricity generation
  • Maintaining and further developing expertise and competence in the nuclear field in the Community
  • Promote the development of fusion energy as a potential future energy source for electricity generation and contribute to the implementation of the European roadmap for fusion
  • To support the policy of the Union and its Member States to continuously improve nuclear safety, safeguards and security
